One of the most challenging aspects of selling your home is keeping it clean and pristine for future buyers who seem to stop by with only a moment’s notice. Keeping your home show ready is necessary if you want to sell quickly. This process can be made far less stressful if you incorporate these seven hacks.
1. Simplify your belongings:
Sort and discard unwanted items before you pay a mover to move them. Doing so will not only help you when organizing your new home, it will automatically make your current one look less cluttered. Consider renting a storage unit for belongings you wish to keep that are not used daily. The savings gained from selling your home sooner will outweigh the nominal cost. Many self-storage companies offer very low introductory rates on units for the first month. Research these offers and take advantage of them.
2. Put things away as you use them:
The impact of putting items away immediately after they are used can hardly be overstated. Everything from the toaster your toothbrush should have an assigned out-of-sight spot to which to return. Use this opportunity to teach children to pick up after themselves after playing with toys and craft supplies.
3. Take on one room a day:
Rather than trying to clean your house all at once or even once a week, assign each room a day of the week. For example, Monday = living room, Tuesday = bathrooms, Wednesday = Kitchen, etc. This way, every room is always within a week of its last cleaning without having to spend a huge amount of time at once or hiring a housekeeper.
4. Keep up with the laundry:
A room can instantly feel cleaner when clothes are off the floor or furniture and laundry bins are not overflowing. Make a point to do one load of laundry a day and make sure each family member contributes to putting away his/her own clothes.
5. Focus on the features
Every square inch of the house does not need to be spotless in order to leave an impression of cleanliness. While potential buyers will scrutinize, they are much more likely to focus on those features of the home that have the most impact. If you have beautiful granite countertops in your kitchen, make sure those are clear. If the master-bath is your show-stopper, it should sparkle.
6. Establish a 10-minute quick-clean plan:
Create a detailed routine to pick up clutter which will naturally accumulate. You can assign each family member a room or a specific chore that you know will be left to the last minute. Planning ahead allows everyone to mobilize quickly when you get that call that an agent is on the way.
7. Keep a “Sparkle-Bucket”:
This last hack seems simple but can save you a ton of time. Most people keep their cleaning products scattered throughout the house. Instead, keep essentials such as multipurpose cleaner, a duster, and rag in a convenient bucket that you can grab for a quick once-over of the home before your buyers arrive.
